THE PENNY, A Novel

Authors, Joyce Meyer and Deborah Bedford
Reviewer, Mary Beth Palmer

I found this book at the WSEFC library and am delighted to share with you what I've learned.

The Authors…Joyce Meyer and Deborah Bedford. First, I’d probably read any Joyce Meyer book. I’m sure not everyone feels this way, especially my husband. You either love or hate Joyce Meyers’ books and materials. Let me share my secret. While on a trip with my husband I decided to read a novel by Joyce Meyer rather than listen to her CDs because, with a voice like hers, well, it would probably grate on my nerves. So what did I do? Yes, I read the entire book aloud to my husband. Well, he usually likes the sound of my voice and beside that, we’re in the car, and he was kind of trapped (don’t tell me you’ve never done that!). And the result? I loved the book, and my husband is now a Meyer fan.

Overall, The Penny by Joyce Meyer will cause you to consider how God works in the smallest details, even something as small as a penny.

Jenny Blake had no idea how her life would change the day she stooped to pick up a penny that was embedded in hot black tar or asphalt. This started a chain of events that transformed her life and the lives others around her in amazing ways.

Jenny enters into a friendship with Miss Shaw, a woman who wears white gloves and is the biggest mystery on Grand Avenue. She’s changed Jenny’s future forever after offering her a job in the local jewelry store. They form a friendship that allows both of them to confront terrible secrets from their pasts that continued to plague their lives.

Jenny hides and destroys her life because of an abusive father. Miss Shaw hides in the shadows of others because of unspoken pain, hiding under those white gloves.

Can these two women learn to overcome their brokenness, grief and pain with a little work and a lot of God’s love? What freedom!
