Upward Sports’ focus and passion have resulted attracted almost 200 youngsters to its fall flag football and cheerleading program that starts this next week. And over 80% of whom do not attend West Shore.
Brochures distributed in local schools, word of mouth, the enthused leadership of Bob Wickliffe, and, of course, the power of prayer have generated growing interest in Upward Sports over the past four years. The quality of the program has encouraged parents and kept young people coming back.
The program is simple. Three divisions, grouped by age, comprise 14 teams that practice from 6 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights and compete in games on Saturday morning. That means kids practice just one hour a week and spend one hour in games, all in one place. Upward Sports does not want families to have to squeeze yet another time-consuming activity into their already busy schedules.
Talking about competing, one of Upward Sports' trademarks is creating a non- competitive environment. Game scores are kept, but no standings. The group's "Every Child Is a Winner" motto appeals especially to parents who are stressed by the highly competitive nature of other sports programs.
The ultimate objective is not numbers; it's changed lives. The program has seen a number of children come to know Jesus, including a young Buddhist, and previously unchurched families have started attending West Shore.
If your son or daughter -- or, ideally, a neighbor's son or daughter -- might be interested in getting involved in Upward Sports, registration for the January - March basketball and cheering program starts in November. Contact Sharon Hess.

The sports seasons and camps conclude with a special program for the entire family. The concluding program is a special time where every child receives an award and affirmation for their participation.
In Upward sports, practice is just one hour, one night a week. Games are one hour on Saturdays. The seasons generally include 3-4 preseason practices and 7-8 weekly practices and games.
